How to Create a Homework Station
Families with school-age children make up a large percentage of buyers of new homes in Prosper TX. They’re attracted to the area’s amenities and good school districts. In order to get the most out of their education, students of any age will benefit from having a prepared space to do their schoolwork.
A homework station doesn’t have to be an elaborate office-like setup with a formal desk. It can be as simple as a dining table, the kitchen island, or a DIY desk in their bedroom. For best results, the homework area should be away from the TV and other entertainment and ideally not in a busy area of the house. Younger kids can benefit from being within easy earshot of parents who can help them as needed.
- Choose an area of your home that can accommodate a work surface and storage. This can be a traditional desk or perhaps a table with a nearby shelf or cabinet where supplies can be stored.
- Provide comfortable seating. Experiment with different chairs, cushions or even an exercise ball to see what works for your kid.
- If you have multiple children, you may have to create several homework stations unless they can work together in one space. You might also consider having them use the same space at different times of day.
- Make sure the work area has good lighting. Desk lamps often work better for this than overhead lighting.
- Personalize the space with a few decorative items, posters or artwork. Homework spaces don’t have to be boring!
- Consider playing soft music or running a white noise machine if your child is easily distracted by household noise.
