7 Tips for Relocating During the School Year

1. Give kids plenty of time to absorb the news. Tell them about the move well in advance of moving day. Let them know they can talk to you at any time about their questions or concerns.
2. If you can, take children to see the new house and let them look around their new rooms. If an in-person visit isn’t feasible, show them photos of the spaces. Help them get emotionally invested in their new rooms by asking for their input on décor and furniture arrangements.
3. Try to keep your family’s daily routine as stable as possible during and after the move. This is especially important for younger children.
4. If you can choose your child’s school, research the options. Find out what extracurricular activities are available for your kids.
5. Collect school and health records and transfer them to the new school. Follow up to make sure everything is ready for your child to enroll.
6. Take your children to the new school ahead of time to meet the teachers and tour the building.
7. Help children stay in touch with their old friends while encouraging them to make new ones.
