Rowlett Families Benefit from Garland ISD “Choice of School” Program

Students who live in new homes in Rowlett TX have a benefit that isn’t offered in most other school districts: They get to choose which school they attend within the district.

Garland ISD’s “Choice of School” program allows parents to select which campus their child will attend in the upcoming school year. While the first-choice pick can’t be guaranteed, the district says that more than 96% of students do get assigned to their chosen campus.

Parents must make their school requests during the open selection periods each year. The choice period is January and February for students attending grades 1-12 in the upcoming school term. The selection period is March through May for Pre-K and kindergarten students.

Current students can opt to stay at their current school or request a change during the choice period. New students, including kindergartners and transfer students, or those advancing to sixth or ninth grade must select a campus during the enrollment process.

When requesting a campus, parents list their top 3 choices. The district will try to place each child in their preferred school. Factors that affect placement include available space, proximity to the student’s home, mandated ethnicity ratios and teacher-student ratios. Parents should keep in mind that bus transportation is not guaranteed for each school selected. Students must also be registered for transportation to their assigned school. The transportation registration period is between March and May.
