Nearly 30 cities across the country have joined the U.S. Department of Energy program to receive free technical assistance on various aspects of moving to solar energy.

Cities in the SolSmart program receive bronze, silver or gold level designations based on their success at reducing non-hardware “soft costs” that can slow the move to solar power. These costs are associated with processing applications, issuing permits, inspections, and regulatory procedures.

According to Andrea Luecke, President and Executive Director of The Solar Foundation, “Successfully reducing soft costs benefits not only solar customers, but can stretch limited budgets through increased local government efficiency and send a signal to the solar industry that a community is ‘open for [solar] business.’”
