Little Elm resident Niki Isenhart started a local branch of “Hike It Baby” to help fill a void in her life that stemmed from postpartum depression. Isenhart says the group encourages each other to get outside, whether for an evening stroll in their own neighborhood, or a scheduled hike with other families. She says today’s kids are, “attached to screens and mobile devices and are disconnected from the natural world around them. The benefits of being outdoors for both parents and children are immeasurable.

The Hike It Baby website says outdoor exercise helps diminish postpartum depression in new mothers, and helps cognitive functioning, attention deficit disorder and overall well-being in children. Isenhart says anyone can join Hike It Baby, but participants are encouraged to sign an online waiver for protection in case something happens on the trail.
